The Turquoise
Coast / Lycia Region |
- The remains of many ancient
cities, dating back to Lycian, Byzantine and - more
recently - the middle ages, can be found within an
easy driving distance. These include Arykanda,
Xanthos, Patara and Letoon, as well as the less
well-known, but equally evocative Kyunae and Hoyran,
both of which offer beautiful views and surprisingly
intact remains.
- A visit to Kekova (Ucagiz) is not
to be missed. Here you can see the remains of an
ancient city underneath the sea, long ago destroyed
by a major earthquake. Buildings, harbour walls and
even mosaics can be seen on a clear, still day. At
nearby Simena (Kalekoy), you will find a miniature
Lycian city, complete with its own amphitheatre,
tucked right inside the remains of a Knights of St
John medieval castle, with stunning views through
the ramparts across to Kekova and out to sea.
- And if you fancy a day away from
all things Turkish, head for the Greek island of
Meis, which faces Kas harbour, just a few kilometres
out to sea. Ferries leave daily at 10.30am,
returning late afternoon.

Kas / Cukurbag
Village
|
- Kas makes an ideal base for a
holiday in a beautiful unspoilt area of Turkey. The
town has a good variety of restaurants, offering
everything from simple village fare to smart cuisine
with just about everything in between. A good range
of supermarkets, banks and other services can all be
found in the town centre, along with enticing shops
selling spices, silver and gold jewellery, leather,
carpets, kilims and other unusual textiles.
- As well as
two small pebble beaches, Kas has a number of very
welcoming beach clubs, where you can sunbathe and
swim from man-made platforms. Across the harbour,
reached by local boats, which leave every few
minutes, you will find the small sand and pebble
beaches of Liman Agzi, which are particularly
inviting in the hot summer months. Kaputas beach, about 15
minutes drive west of
Kas is also stunning, as is the 13km long white sand
beach at Patara, about
50 minutes drive west from Kas.
- Cukurbag,
just ten minutes from
Kas centre, is a haven of peace and traditional
rural life. Totally unspoilt, it is home to red and
Persian squirrels, tortoises, chameleons and a huge
variety of butterflies and birds, including eagles
and other birds of prey. Villa Lykia is in a very pretty
setting, surrounded by small farms and almond
orchards, giving you the chance to experience real
Turkish village life, while having all the
attractions and conveniences of Kas right on your doorstep.
- Located on
the Lycian Way, voted
one of the Sunday Times top-ten long distance walks, Cukurbag is an ideal
location for a walking holiday which takes in
beautiful ancient sites along the way. Information
on walks, transportation and guides can be supplied
on request.
- If water sports are your thing,
Kas has a large selection of diving sites and a
number of qualified companies offering a whole range
of diving options, including night-, cave- and
wreck-diving, as well as open-water diving and Padi
open water courses. If you just fancy a lazy day on
the water, stroll along the harbour in the evening
and you can arrange a day out with a barbecue on
board with any of the boat captains - if your party
is small, they will arrange for you to join in with
another party.
- Back on
dry land, there is a labyrinth of mountain tracks
and seldom-used asphalt roads, ideal for mountain
biking. Other adventure activities include canyoning and abseiling, and Kas is one of only two
locations on the whole coast authorised for
paragliding.
- Whether you want your holiday to
be activity-filled or just plain lazy, you will find Cukurbag the perfect location and, above all,
quintessentially Turkish.
